Add Some Colour to Your Winter Garden

When you think of home maintenance, often you forget about a big part of the appeal of a home - the garden! Autumn is the ideal time to make sure that come the winter months, you can still enjoy your garden in all its glory.
 

We've put together a list of plants to plant this season, that will add some colour come Winter.

During the cold winter months, these plants will add some colour to your garden:

  • Hypoestes aristata (Ribbon Bush)

  • Aloe spp (Aloes) - some of the new hybrid Aloes have a longer or different flowering time and can, if planned and grouped properly, ensure colour from autumn right through winter.

  • Leptospermum scoparium 'Cherry Brandy' (Australian Tea bush)

  • Euryops virgineus (Honey Daisy)

  • Camellia japonica (Common Camellia)

  • Erica spp (Heather)

  • Azalea spp (Azalea)

  • Leucospermum spp (Pincushion)

  • Protea spp (Sugarbush)

  • Kniphofia praecox (Red-hot poker)


Select from the following hedging and screening plants:

  • Escallonia varieties

  • Abelia varieties

  • Syzygium paniculatum (Brush Cherry)

  • Viburnum odoratissimum (Sweet Viburnum)

  • Carissa macrocarpa (Cape Num-num) - excellent for security as well.

  • Polygala myrtifolia (September Bush)

  • Pittosporum varieties

  • Duranta varieties

  • Freylinia tropica (Honey Bell Bush)

  • Raphiolepis indica (Indian Hawthorn)


Consider the following for lower hedges:

  • Buxus sempervirens (Boxwood)

  • Lavandula 'Margaret Roberts' (Margaret Roberts Lavender).

  • Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary)

  • Portulacaria affra (Spekboom)

  • Cuphea hyssopifolia (False Heather)
